Comprehensive Breastfeeding Program

We are proud of our extensive breastfeeding program.  While encouraging all new mothers who choose to nurse, we understand that this is a very personal decision affected by many social, emotional, and medical factors.  We support all mothers and families whether they choose to bottle or breastfeed.

Breastfeeding may be natural, but many women have commonly-encountered difficulties.  Mothers and their newborns must learn from each other; but we can assist and guide you to ensure this learning curve is not unnecessarily painful or prolonged.  We understand, too, that there is no “one right way” to nurse your baby.

Additionally, there are different philosophies regarding breastfeeding.  If you must introduce formula or a pacifier, this is not a failure!  For some mother-infant dyads, these ‘supplements’ can actually prolong and assist with breastfeeding over time.

All of our staff, from the front office to the providers, have training or knowledge of breastfeeding; culminating with our own physician assistant and lactation consultant, Allene Troy.

Lactation Consult

Lactation consultants provide valuable advice.  Not only does Allene have a unique ability to counsel mothers with regard to nursing; as a pediatric clinician, she also provides care for infants and children.  Among the few combined board certified advanced practitioners and lactation consultants, she can provide services for the entire family.

During a breastfeeding consultation,  a nursing session will be observed by Allene.  She will help evaluate and identify specific issues and provide guidance on how to problem solve.   Additionally, babies will be weighed both before and after nursing, reassuring mother’s of their milk production.  Reducing this anxiety is one of the keys to successful nursing.  Should any concerns arise, please meet with us promptly.  Early identification and resolution is crucial to ensuring successful breastfeeding.
